  • Oil and gas industry

Visa Requirements for Work in the UAE

To find legal employment in the UAE, it is necessary to obtain a work visa. This process is well organised, but there are still many nuances to navigate.

Obtaining a resident visa is easier if you have an employment contract (Employment Visa). You can get it in several steps:

  • First, the candidate receives a job offer from a UAE company.
  • Then a temporary Entry Permit is issued.
  • Then the expat arrives and undergoes a medical examination.
  • They are then issued an Emirates ID (UAE identity card).
  • The employer helps to obtain a residence visa (a stamp in the passport).
  • The employee receives a Labour Card.

The employer is responsible for organising the employment process, which lasts from 2 to 8 weeks. The visa cost can range from $2,000 to $4,000, with the employer also covering all expenses.

In 2021, the UAE legislation introduced the Remote Work Visa, which allows clerks to work for foreign companies while residing in the Emirates. To obtain it, you must prove a monthly income of $5,000 or more, obtain health insurance, and have an employment contract.

Changing jobs or even careers in the UAE has become significantly easier due to recent changes in the country's labour legislation. Until recently, resigning required permission from your employer, but this is no longer necessary. However, it's important to remember the notice period, typically 1–3 months.

It is also worth keeping in mind the entry bans. We'll list the categories of people who may face restrictions when seeking employment in the UAE. These include:

  • Persons who have been imprisoned.
  • Those who were previously deported from the UAE.
  • Natives of certain countries, the list of which updates from time to time.
  • People suffering from diseases such as HIV, tuberculosis and similar.

Often, to change their visa from a tourist to a work visa, expats have to leave the country and re-enter it. Representatives of some nationalities can obtain a "change of status" without leaving the country, but this is an exception, not a rule.

Life in the UAE for Expats

Foreigners value life in the UAE for comfort, multicultural environment and good financial remuneration, but may find it difficult to adapt to strict rules. You can easily feel like a “citizen of the world” if you understand local realities.

Housing is the main expense in the UAE residents' budget. On average, monthly rent for apartments in Abu Dhabi starts from 120,000 roubles, while a full-size one-bedroom apartment can be rented for 150,000 rubles. Apartments located closer to the city centre and the sea will cost more.

The quality of healthcare is good, but the cost is quite high. Without insurance, a single doctor's appointment can cost at least 10,000 roubles. Residents are required to obtain health insurance, which is typically provided by their employers. Private clinics are performing well, and their contingent consists of Europeans, Indians and Egyptians.

Public transportation isn't always available. Dubai is famous for its modern metro, trams and buses. In Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, people move predominantly by bus and taxi. But the vast majority of the population owns their own vehicles, as petrol costs 40–50 roubles per litre, and the roads are of excellent quality.

In the UAE, adherence to the principles of Islam should not be forgotten even in everyday life. Foreign workers need to get used to showing respect for local norms and laws:

  • Dress modestly in all public places except the beach, where the dress code is a bit more forgiving.
  • Alcohol can only be purchased at specialised outlets with permission from the authorities. Drinking alcoholic beverages in public places is a criminal offense..
  • You should not display affection publicly: hugging, kissing and even holding hands is only allowed at home.
  • During Ramadan, it is forbidden to eat, drink or smoke publicly.

All this does not mean that life in the UAE is unbearable and full of taboos. You just need to understand what is allowed and what is not. In the UAE, those who honour local traditions are treated with respect.
