Do Russians Need a Visa for the UAE in 2026: Entry Rules, Documents, Tips

Сохранить статью Save the article:

What is this article about? Russians do not need to arrange a UAE visa in advance, as it is issued free of charge directly at the airport in the form of a stamp. The United Arab Emirates is on the list of countries open to Russian citizens without prior authorisation.

Who is this for? For those who plan a trip to Dubai, Sharjah or Abu Dhabi and want to know which documents to bring, how to conduct themselves in a Muslim country, and what is prohibited from being carried across the border. Read to the end: all the information you need before your flight is gathered here.

Do Russians Need a Visa for the UAE and How Do You Obtain One

Russian citizens are on the list of countries for which visa-free entry to the UAE applies. A tourist visa is not arranged in advance; a stamp is placed in the passport directly at passport control upon arrival. No applications, questionnaires or consular fees are required.

How a visa is issued at a UAE airport

After landing, travellers pass through passport control. An airport officer checks the foreign passport and scans the iris — this is a standard biometric procedure for all arrivals. A stamp with the date of entry is then placed in the passport.

The entire procedure takes a few minutes. At this point you must have with you a foreign passport with a validity period of at least 6 months from the date of entry into the country, and a return ticket.

Entry may be refused if the passport has expired or its validity expires before the minimum permissible period, and also if border officials have any queries regarding the documents.

How many days does the visa cover and can it be extended

The period of stay under the stamp is 90 days. This period is counted from the date of entry into the country. Tourists may remain in the UAE for the entire duration without any additional action.

If it becomes necessary to stay longer, the period of stay can be extended. To do this, one applies to the UAE immigration services or leaves the country and re-enters. A fine is imposed for any violation of the visa regime and is charged for each day of overstay. You may return to the UAE after using the maximum period of stay after another 90 days.

What Documents are Required to Enter the UAE

The set of documents required for entry into the country is straightforward, but each element is important. A missing document may be grounds for refusal at border control. Below is the complete list with explanations.

Foreign passport: what validity period is required

Only a foreign passport is required to enter the UAE. A Russian internal passport is not accepted and will not be recognised at passport control.

Important! The passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry. If less time remains until the passport expires, you may be denied boarding at the departure airport. Check your passport in advance.

Is medical insurance required for a trip to Dubai?

Medical insurance is compulsory for a trip to the UAE. The minimum insurance coverage is 30,000 euros. The insurance included by tour operators when selling package holidays often has limited coverage: it may not include hospitalisation, emergency dental treatment or evacuation. Before your trip, it is worth checking the terms of the policy and, if necessary, supplementing it with an extended option. The insurance company is chosen by the traveller themselves.

Return ticket and other compulsory documents

A return or transit ticket is a compulsory document upon entry. Border control officers may request confirmation that the tourist intends to leave the country. Without it, the risk of being refused entry is high.

In addition to a passport, insurance and a ticket, you must also have with you: a printed or electronic hotel booking confirmation, as well as sufficient funds for your stay in the country. The latter may be checked at passport control.

What to bring if you are travelling to the UAE with a child

Every child, regardless of age, must have their own foreign passport. Simply adding the child to a parent's passport is not enough.

If the child is travelling with one parent or with third parties, a notarially certified consent for departure from the other parent or both parents will be required. If the child and the accompanying parent have different surnames, a copy of the birth certificate must be brought, as it confirms the family relationship. It is better to have the original birth certificate with you as well: in certain cases it may be requested.

Document Requirement
Foreign passport Validity — at least 6 months from the date of entry
Medical insurance Coverage — at least 30,000 euros
Return ticket Compulsory, an electronic version is acceptable
Hotel booking Printout or screenshot on a phone
Consent for the child's departure Notarially certified (required if the child is travelling with one parent or with third parties)
Birth certificate Copy (required only if the child and parent have different surnames)

Ensure that each child has their own foreign passport and, when travelling without both parents, a notarially certified consent for departure. If surnames differ, bring a copy (and preferably the original) of the birth certificate; additionally, have medical insurance and confirmation of the return ticket.

What Are the Differences Between Entry Rules for Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi?

The UAE is a federation of seven emirates, and each has its own particularities. The passport and insurance requirements are the same throughout, but the rules of conduct and certain restrictions differ. Tourists visiting for the first time are often unaware of this.

Entry into Dubai for Russians

Dubai is the most popular emirate among Russians. Entry rules are standard: a foreign passport, insurance and a return ticket. Alcohol is sold at licensed establishments: restaurants, hotels and specialised shops. A tourist fee is charged upon check-in at a hotel: a fixed sum per night, which is charged separately from the room rate.

Particularities of entry into Sharjah

Sharjah is the cultural capital of the UAE and the most conservative of the major emirates. The main difference from Dubai: a complete ban on alcohol is in force in Sharjah. Transporting alcohol across the emirate's border is a criminal offence, even if the alcohol was purchased in another emirate.

Standards of behaviour in public places are stricter: clothing must cover the shoulders and knees, and loud behaviour is undesirable. The passport and insurance requirements are the same as in Dubai.

What to know when entering Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi is the capital and the largest emirate of the country. Entry requirements are the same as those of Dubai. A tourist tax is also charged upon check-in at hotels: a fixed rate per night. Alcohol is permitted in licensed establishments. In terms of strictness, Abu Dhabi occupies an intermediate position between the liberal Dubai and the conservative Sharjah.

What You Need to Know about the Rules of Conduct and Customs in the UAE

The UAE is a Muslim country, and its laws differ considerably from those to which Russian tourists are accustomed. Ignorance of the rules does not exempt one from liability. Below is the most important information without unnecessary scaremongering, but without omissions either.

Dress code, alcohol and religious restrictions

Swimwear and shorts are acceptable on the beach, but in shopping centres, markets and other public places, clothing must cover the shoulders and knees. In mosques, women must cover their heads and wear long clothing; wraps are available for hire at some mosques.

Alcohol is permitted only in licensed establishments: bars, restaurants and hotels. Appearing on the street whilst intoxicated is prohibited; it is an administrative offence. In Sharjah, alcohol is entirely banned.

What is prohibited in public places:

  • photographing people without their permission, especially women in traditional dress;
  • displaying loud aggression or becoming involved in conflicts;
  • demonstrating physical intimacy in public places;
  • consuming food and drink in public places during the daytime during Ramadan.

Customs rules upon entry to and departure from the UAE

Upon entry, it is permitted to bring in up to 400 cigarettes or 50 cigars, up to 2 litres of alcohol (for non-Muslims), as well as perfume in a reasonable quantity for personal use. The following are strictly prohibited: narcotic substances (their transportation carries a severe criminal penalty, including the death penalty), pornographic materials, and gambling equipment. This list is adhered to without exception.

What may not be taken out of the UAE to Russia

Products of animal and plant origin are permissible in small quantities for personal use. Alcohol may be taken out in the quantity established by Russian customs: up to 3 litres duty-free, and from 3 to 5 liters duty-bearing. Tobacco products are limited to the personal import allowance.

Large sums of cash (in excess of the equivalent of 10,000 US dollars) must be declared when leaving the UAE. It is advisable to carry receipts for electronic equipment and jewellery, as they confirm that the items were purchased for personal use and not for resale.

Money, transport and other practical advice

The national currency of the UAE is the dirham (AED). Bank cards are accepted at most shops, hotels and restaurants, but it's best to have cash at markets and street vendors. Taxis should be booked via apps, as they fix the route and price.

The time difference with Moscow is plus 1 hour. Tap water in the UAE is not potable; bottled water is used for drinking. Tipping is not obligatory but is customary — usually 10% of the bill in restaurants.

Is it possible to enter the UAE with a Russian foreign passport in 2026?

Yes. Russia is on the list of countries whose citizens enjoy visa-free entry to the United Arab Emirates. No special permits or prior approvals are required for a trip. This right has been granted to the Russian Federation on a permanent basis.

What should you do if your UAE visa has expired?

A fine is charged for each day of overstay. The longer you delay, the higher the final amount. It is possible to extend your stay through the UAE immigration services, either in person or online through the official portal. An alternative is a short-term departure from the country followed by re-entry. It is inadvisable to delay, as overstaying is recorded and may affect the possibility of entering in the future.
